Physics Experiments between poetry and bestsellers
Frankfurt, 18.10.2016 - Science to touch and get involved - this motto is from 19.-23.10. the status of the initiative "Hessen schafft Wissen" at the Frankfurt Book Fair. At several experimental stations, scientists from the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS) make current research vivid. Thursday and Friday will also be a humorous talk by Dr. Ing. Sascha Vogel about physics in Hollywood movies.
At booth A26 in hall 3.1, the initiative "Hessen schafft Wissen" presents together with the FIAS several fascinating experimental stations. The visitors can experiment with and get an insight into the current research. It can be understood how particle accelerators, large heavy ion physics experiments or suspended superconductors work. "It is just as important to us to convey the fun of science as well as the content itself," says Sascha Vogel, Knowledge Ambassador of the initiative and physicist at FIAS.
The fun is also the focus of Vogel's award-winning lecture program "Physics in Hollywood". On Thursday, 20.10. and Friday, 21.10, at 10:00 o´clock he is going to answer for example the following questions: Do lightsabers work? How is it possible that James Bond always wins? Why does not Spiderman's thin filament tear? The answers are provided by the physicist in an entertaining sweep through the film world.
"Hessen schafft Wissen" is an initiative of Hessian universities and research institutes, the state of Hesse and partners from the private sector. It wants to promote the enthusiasm for science, show the achievements of Hessian science and illustrate its benefits.
The Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS) is an interdisciplinary research institute for the theoretical exploration of complex structures in nature, founded by the Goethe University Frankfurt and funded by public financiers, foundations and private individuals. The work focuses on basic research in the areas of brain research, life sciences, computer science, systemic risks and physics.
