Successful doctoral symposium of the Bernstein Network at FIAS
Transition and change in career and research
The next generation of neuroscientists was in the focus of the Bernstein Network PhD Symposium at FIAS. On October 2/3, following the international Bernstein Conference in Frankfurt, it provided a platform for young scientists to network, exchange experiences, and to connect.
The topic of this year's symposium, ‘Transitions’, focussed on transition and change in various phases of academic and professional careers. Discussions centred on adapting to new life circumstances and in new professional environments, one's own role and self-description. On the second day, in addition to these professional transitions, the focus was also on the necessary transition and communication of our scientific research to the general public.
Besides presentations by Roxana Zeraati, Richard Gao, and Kristine Heiney as well as an exciting panel discussion on the opportunities and hurdles of academic careers, the symposium offered additional interactive programme items. A particular highlight was Sascha Vogel's workshop on science communication. Several participant-led ‘unconference’ sessions and a pub quiz rounded off the programme and offered participants a relaxed atmosphere to get to know each other and network.
The Bernstein Doctoral Symposium has proven to be an important platform for young researchers. The event facilitated an open exchange of ideas, fostered new connections and provided participants with valuable impetus for their future professional development. "The participants were very enthusiastic," sums up Jonas Elpelt (FIAS) from the organising team with doctoral students Sigrid Trägenap (FIAS) and Lisa Haxel (Tübingen). “We hope to welcome them back to FIAS next year.”
